Should you write a kids’ book? Take this 5-question Yes/No quiz!

Five questions:  that’s all it takes to figure out if you’re cut out for writing kids’ books.  Yes?  No?  Maybe so?

Let’s get started!

1.  Do you have a billion brilliant story ideas and can’t wait to find a ghostwriter so you can hand them over (upon receipt of a signed non-disclosure and a promise of a share of the royalties) and get them back as fully-conceived stories ready to publish?

2.  Did you love a book you read as a kid so much that you want to write the exact same story, only way better than the original author ever could?  Except updated, with computers?  Or robots?  In set in the future, in outer space?  “It’ll be Little House on the Prairie – on Mars, with a robot butler, and hoverboards, like The Jetsons!”

3.  Does your kid love to draw so much

that the editors at the major national publishing house won’t be able to stop themselves from accepting the story you’ve co-written with her?

4.  Do you have an important message to share with kids about the world around them in what’s basically a public service announcement delivered by furry animals through unrealistic dialogue?

5.  Are you longing for fame and fortune and can’t wait for all those kiddies to line up to get your autograph?

BZZT!

Sorry, these were all trick questions.  If you answered Yes to any of them, perhaps think about another field.

(If you answered yes to Question #4, go right ahead and read one of my earliest posts here, Avoiding the #1 mistake: tossing in values.)

What other questions might help steer somebody AWAY from writing a kids’ books if it’s really, obviously not the right career for them???

  2. How about this one... do you have a brilliant idea for a fantasy adventure involving orphans that will no doubt be made into a (minimum three) blockbuster movie franchise?
